Posted on Reddit’s controversial r/AmITeA**hole forum, a sibling under the username u/MannyXXXVII shared their story and has received over 9,000 upvotes and 900 comments.
The original poster (OP) started their story by explaining that they have a medical condition called “impacted earwax” which is caused by a swimmer’s ear. They wrote that having ears “sucks”. They explain that they have “way too much earwax” and that they need to clean them daily to avoid pain. Yet it remains unpleasant for them.
“My older brother, Sebastian, has a fiancé, Tina, and they live in a room in our house that my mom rents out to them,” the OP said. “Recently I realized Tina realized how much I clean my house. , and said, ‘You really shouldn’t be cleaning them that much, I feel like you’re probably exaggerating a bit just for attention.’
“I told her I wasn’t, and she said, ‘Okay, well, I guess your poor little ears are reason enough to waste money on cotton swabs so often.’ I know it was insignificant, but I said, “Okay, I’m going for 2 weeks without cleaning my ears. And every day you have to take a picture of the inside of each one, and see what happens.” And so her pact with the devil was made,” they continued.
Tina admitted after five days when the sibling’s ears “leaked on their shirt” and his “ears were on fire” because the ear drops they were using didn’t work due to the excess earwax. The OP admitted they thought it was funny, but Tina and Sebastian thought it was “small and gross” and are now calling them the “waxy grimy creep”.

What is “swimmer’s ear”?
Swimmer’s ear, also known as otitis externa, is an inflammation, irritation, or infection of your outer ear canal, according to Hopkins Medicine. Swimmer’s ear can be caused by swimming in unclean water.
Other possible causes include being in warm or humid places, cleaning or scratching your ear canal with fingers or cotton swabs, having dry skin in the ear canal, having an object in your ear canal, and having extra earwax.
Swimmer’s ear can be treated by keeping your ears dry, taking certain ear drops that help reduce swelling and kill bacteria, and by taking the medication provided by a health professional.
According to the CDC, to prevent a swimmer’s ear from developing, keep the ears as dry as possible and use earplugs or swim molds when swimming and pull the earlobe in different directions to allow water to exit the ear canal. If there is still water in the ear, use a hair dryer on the lowest setting to make the water disappear.
Dangers of Using Cotton Swabs for Ear Cleaning
Cotton swabs or swabs are a popular choice that people use to clean their ears. However, cotton swabs can cause some earwax to be pushed against the medial canal and eardrum, known as the eardrum, and can impair hearing and lead to a painful infection, according to verywellhealth.com.
“[Not the a**hole]. Tina needs to learn to look after her own beesearwax,” u/StAlvis joked, receiving the best comment from over 16,000 votes.
U/TheDevilsAdvocxte exclaimed, “[Not the a**hole] I got the same!!!!!!! It’s not comfortable at all and stop using Q-tips! Q-tips push the wax further into the ear. You have to buy a kit from amazon. I can’t count how many times I’ve been to the doctors and they said ‘dude, your earwax is all the way under your ear membrane’. Don’t do it to yourself! You can also have your earwax professionally removed. Although I do not recommend the professional for every time. It’s easier to buy the kit and ignore them. They don’t know the battle.”
“[Not the a**hole] and you have been given very important information. Tina is a pot stirrer, and someone who will use the ole “you seek attention” for any legitimate concerns you may have. She actually gave you a present. When she starts behaving the same way again, you can say, “Haven’t we gone down this road before?” and just look at her face. Don’t look away. Don’t flinch, nothing. She should have the keen sense of NOT wanting to seem silly again, and will probably leave you alone. The point is you have to be ready,” u/PerkyLurkey said.
