Professional teeth whitening can produce impressive results, but it’s pricey and not always convenient – step into the screen this teeth whitening pen raves about.
There is a huge range of home teeth whitening products offered that are easy, safe and according to some satisfied users can be very effective.
One brand that has become a best-seller on Amazon is MySweetSmile, which sells non-peroxide products, with its teeth-whitening pen an apparent sensation for those who want brighter scrunches.
One customer claimed they noticed results ‘immediately’: ‘This product was great, definitely give it a thumbs up. It says to use three times a week but I used mine once a day because I had really bad teeth before and noticed the difference right away it took about a month of daily use before I ran out of gel which is good for the price, and I will soon buy again. Strongly recommended.’
After a few weeks of use, this customer claimed they saw a shine to their teeth: ‘At first I was skeptical if this would work but the price was right so I thought I’d give it a try and after a few weeks it’s it made a noticeable difference. Very happy.’
Another claimed, ‘I didn’t expect this to work much, but it literally made my teeth brighter in 1 use, which I was over the moon with. After using it several times, my teeth have become a lot whiter.’
So, in a quest to brighten our own smile, we tried the whitening pen to see if it was worth it.
Firstly, the pen uses a precision brush which is ideal if you want a more targeted approach, such as if there are certain teeth you want to focus on or if you have crowded or crooked teeth and hard-to-reach areas.
Also useful if you want to take it with you everywhere, because it easily fits in your pocket or handbag, so perfect for keeping your smile pearly white on holiday.
To use, simply twist the base of the pen to dispense the gel and apply it directly to your teeth. Wait 10 minutes, rinse with water and you’re done. It’s so simple it’s almost too good to be true…
Metro tries the MySweetSmile Precision Teeth Whitening Pen
Mel says, “In a quest for brighter crunches, I gave this teeth whitening pen a whirl after it hit my desk. I am quite skeptical when it comes to home teeth whitening products, but when I looked at the ingredients and saw that there was no peroxide involved, I thought I would give it a try.
Full disclosure: I don’t have a deviant smile, but it could definitely be brighter.
“Using the pen is easy enough, you twist the tip until the product comes out, then essentially paint your teeth and try not to get it all over your lips for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.” That’s probably the most annoying part, to be honest.
‘Do these pens do the trick? I used it once every few days over the course of a few weeks after seeing some people notice results after just one use. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen stunning clarity after one lick of paint, so it seems I’ll have to use it for a lot more purposes than I do to see any notable change.
‘But as someone who loves a cup of coffee (or four) and a glass of red wine (not necessarily together…), I was pleasantly surprised when, during a routine dental visit, the dental hygienist commented on how staining on my teeth had improved. .
“I try to be strict with my brushing routine, so I can’t say it’s all down to the pen, but we still aim for those Margot Robbie-esque pearly whites.
“I *wouldn’t* recommend it, but if you’re looking for a miracle whitening machine, this might not be it.”
Ingredients
As mentioned earlier, MySweetSmile does not use peroxide in its teeth whitening pen.
The key ingredient is a chemical called Phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid (or PAP for short), which the brand discovered — after years of research — oxidizes teeth stains without releasing harmful molecules known as free radicals.
Dr. Richard Marques, a leading Harley Street dentist, supports this theory, although he explains that research is still in its infancy.
He told us, ‘There hasn’t been much research on phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid in teeth whitening, so it’s hard to say.
“It is considered a gentle teeth whitening agent, although it may not produce the same results as other products offered.”
The Precision Teeth Whitening Pen from MySweetSmile costs £19.99 and is available here.
The whitening pen also contains nHA (hydroxyapatite), which is said to remineralize and strengthen enamel, reducing sensitivity.
However, keep in mind Dr. Antony Lam’s guidelines when using a teeth whitening product at home so you don’t do more harm than good.
- Do your research and speak to your dentist – the teeth whitening industry has grown significantly in recent times and as a result there are many unsafe, low quality products on the market, which give substandard results and actually pose risks to your dental health. Be sure to only use teeth whitening products from a trusted manufacturer and as recommended by your dentist.
- Many whitening strips, and teeth whitening products in general, contain hydrogen peroxide, which can damage tooth enamel and, in turn, cause sensitivity with prolonged use or overuse. Again, if you’re concerned that whitening your teeth with over-the-counter products is causing sensitivity, seek treatment from your dentist who will use whitening products in safe dosages and can advise you on how to manage any discomfort.
- Manage your expectations […] if you have more noticeable discoloration, you should consider professional whitening through your dentist, as over-the-counter products are milder and will only make a subtle difference.
