Legislative Update – January 25, 2023

Dear neighbours,

On January 3, I was officially sworn in as your new representative for District 42A, representing West Plymouth and a small portion of Maple Grove. Thank you so much for the opportunity to be your state representative; I am truly humbled by your support. I’m happy to share that I’m already working hard to move forward on the issues that matter to our district and all of Minnesota!

Tax compliance

I’m proud to say that the House worked quickly to pass a bill that would update Minnesota’s tax code to be in line with federal law – already signed by the governor! This will result in more than $100 million in tax cuts for a large number of Minnesota residents, while simplifying future tax returns. This efficient and unified action is just the beginning of an effective legislative session led by House DFL. Passing this bill within the first two weeks of the session will allow the Department of Taxation to incorporate these measures in time for this year’s tax return. I happily voted in favor and encouraged the unanimous passing of the legislation!

Commission assignments

I am pleased to announce my commission assignments for the 2023-2024 legislature. This session I will serve on the Committee on Capital Investmentsthe Finance and Policy Committee for Climate and Energythe Committee on Health Finance and Policy, and the Judicial Finance and Civil Law Committee! These assignments allow me to be an advocate for our district on many of the important issues I heard over and over again this past summer and fall when I knocked on doors in Plymouth and Maple Grove.

With a DFL trifecta, we can invest in our own communities and get started on major capital investment projects. We can work to rebuild our infrastructure in a way that is sustainable for future generations. We can expand access to quality, affordable healthcare. Finally, we can make our justice system work better for everyone. I am so excited to work on these issues and more during this legislature!

Protect reproductive options

Politics has no place in a doctor’s office, and elected officials should not interfere with a patient and their doctor. Last year, however, the US Supreme Court unraveled half a century of legal protections that guaranteed the right to an abortion. The Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act protects Minnesota’s right to birth control, the right to carry a pregnancy to term, and the right to abortion, and ensures the right to privacy for personal decisions about reproductive health. It also prevents interference from anti-choice politicians who try to create or defend medically unnecessary barriers to comprehensive reproductive health care.

Minnesotans overwhelmingly support individuals’ fundamental right to make their own healthcare decisions. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade sends a clear signal that we cannot take these rights for granted. The PRO law codifies these fundamental rights into law, which is essential to ensure long-term reproductive freedom. We must act now to ensure that a future Supreme Court cannot take away the bodily autonomy of Minnesotans. I proudly cast my vote last Thursday evening in support of the PRO Act!
