More than 50% of the population has some kind of dental problem and among them, caries, tooth decay and gum disease are the biggest problems but only a few people realize they have a problem and go to a dental clinic for treatment. The presence of plaque is a major reason for gum disease and when this plaque grows into the gum line and is deposited, it irritates the gums.

This leads to chronic inflammation and decay of the supporting structure of the teeth. Genetics is also a factor in gum disease, as are lifestyle choices. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Gauri Merchant, Director and Consultant, Dental Services at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital: “A diet low in nutrients can reduce the body’s ability to fight infection and increase a person’s susceptibility to gum disease.”

She advised, “Gum inflammation can be treated with hot water. Flossing can also help treat your gums to keep them healthy. Foods like salmon, carrots, apples, and others can help care for your gums.”

To avoid costly and painful dental problems and enjoy healthy teeth and gums, she suggested taking the following measures:

1. Receive proper dental care and strive to control insulin levels. This can help prevent gum disease.

2. Get good dental care to avoid mouth infections. Mouth infections require immediate treatment. A dentist may prescribe antibiotics, medicated mouthwashes, and more frequent cleanings to prevent complications related to bacterial infections.

3. Check blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol levels regularly. There may be a direct correlation between unhealthy levels and increased chances of developing periodontitis.

Jamshed Tavadia, Oral Surgeon, BDS, MDS Periodontist at Masina Hospital, brought his expertise to the same, saying, “The ‘periodontium’ is the supporting tissues that surround the neck and roots of the tooth. The ‘Gingiva’ or gums is one of the 4 parts of this Periodontium.” To have healthy gums, he recommended following these simple rules:

1. Correct brush and correct brushing technique – The bristles of the brush should be soft but straight. Old and frayed brushes do not clean teeth efficiently and should be replaced immediately. The bristles of the brush should be towards the gumline at an angle of approximately 45° to the longitudinal axis of the tooth. Short circular movements should be made with light pressure.

2. Floss and other interproximal devices – Patients usually ask, “What teeth do we need to floss?” The answer is simple – “just those teeth you want to keep healthy.” Proper flossing and the use of interdental aids helps to remove the food particles stuck in the tooth holes.

3. Mouthwash – The over-the-counter products help reduce the rate at which tartar builds up. The mint flavor gives a fresh feeling in the mouth and reduces the bad smell by acting on the bacteria that cause this halitosis. Sometimes the dentist may prescribe chlorhexidine-based therapeutic mouthwashes, especially in compromise or post-operative cases.

4. Regular Dental Checkups – The easiest way to control gum disease is regular dental visits. The earlier the disease stage, the easier it is to treat and, above all, the better prognosis. Early signs of gum bleeding or the slightest recession should be reported and not overlooked.

5. Quit Smoking – It’s no big secret that smoking has a harmful effect on the gums. It causes bone loss which leads to reduction of tooth support. Nicotine also causes reduced blood flow to the gums. Smoking cessation has shown dramatic improvement in gum health in individuals.

So to sum it up, dental experts insist on proper brushing, flossing, mouthwash, regular follow-up with your dentist, and quitting the butt. Remember that poor gum health can lead to the loss of the most beautiful teeth.
