NIFA Food Security Webinar Series: Developing New Measures to Complement the US Home Food Security Survey

On Tuesday, August 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT, Dr. Eric Calloway will explain that while the definition of food security is comprehensive and accurate, measurement has not traditionally been fully operationalized. The USDA Home Food Security Survey Form (HFSSM) is the primary tool used to assess food security in the United States.

HFSSM has pros and cons – like most measures. The main drawbacks from an intervention development or needs assessment perspective are that the HFSSM focuses on one aspect of the food insecurity experience (eg, financial access) and is not designed to provide practical information to inform programming. The GSCN has developed a standard set of measures that assess aspects of food insecurity that are not currently considered under the HFSSM. These measures include assessment of household resilience, the three “other” pillars of food insecurity (ie, availability, use, and stability), and food security/diet selection. This presentation will cover the development, testing, and potential uses of these new measures. The format will be a 45-minute overview of measurement development, results, and uses, and an additional 15 minutes for questions and discussion.
