GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A mother is behind bars after being arrested on charges relating to endangering children in Gallia County, Ohio.
The arrest comes after Nelida Hernandez’s one-year child fell from a second-story window area unsecured by a window air conditioning unit, according to the Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin.
It happened just after 10 a.m. on Friday at an apartment complex along Buck Ridge Road.
“I feel like if we didn’t see that happen, that baby could have been out there all day and nobody would have known. The mom wasn’t coming to the door when we were over there,” Jessica Blanton said.
Blanton had been working at her job nearby when she saw the baby dangling and rushed to help. However, the baby had already fallen right before she could get there.
“The baby was screaming really bad, so I was trying to make sure that there wasn’t anything visibly wrong with her at the time,” Blanton said. “I just picked her up and was trying to console her until either EMTs or police or whoever was coming could attend to her.”
Sheriff Champlin says the child was airlifted to a Columbus Area Medical facility to receive treatment and is expected to recover.
Hernandez is currently lodged at the Gallia County Jail.
This is a developing story.
