The Milwaukee County Zoo has welcomed its newest baby animal — a female reticulated giraffe born on May 27 to mom, Marlee, and dad, Bahatika.
The baby is described by zookeepers as “spunky and strong” and, at her day-old examination, was found to be 164 pounds and around 6 feet tall.
The new giraffe is Marlee’s third baby. Her most recent baby, Maya, was born in 2018, and still lives at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
Marlee is 10 years old and arrived in Milwaukee from Miami in 2013. Bahatika is 17 and arrived in Milwaukee from Colorado in 2006.
The zoo’s giraffe building will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the rest of the week. Since giraffes don’t like loud noises, volunteers will try to keep noise levels down, and the building’s hours will expand as the baby gets more used to visitors.
Marlee and the baby both have the choice of where to go in the indoor habitat, although so far they have mostly been choosing to stay in a back area out of sight of visitors.
People can follow the zoo’s social media accounts to help choose the baby’s name.
