Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is a condition where a person clenches or grinds their teeth while sleeping or unintentionally when awake. This can lead to a lot of discomfort and a range of problems such as headaches, jaw pain, tooth damage and TMJ disorders. This can happen due to high levels of stress, anxiety or even certain medications. People who clench or grind their teeth while sleeping may be doing so because of certain sleep disorders such as snoring and pauses in breathing. How do you know if your bruxism is serious? You may have damaged tooth enamel, your teeth may be chipped or lost, the intense grinding often wakes you up, tired jaw muscles, jaw pain, injury to the inside of your cheek, disturbed sleep are some of the symptoms of the condition. If you want to avoid jaw pain or cracked or chipped teeth, you can follow certain tips to avoid teeth grinding at night.

If you want to stop grinding your teeth, check out these seven options suggested by Dr. Nirali Patel, dental surgeon and oral implantologist FICOI, founder of Smile Craft Dental Studio, you might try to experience some relief.

1. Get a nighttime mouthguard

Constant grinding can erode the enamel on your teeth and make them more vulnerable to cavities. Fortunately, sleeping with a mouthguard protects your teeth. A custom night watchman will be more comfortable than any you can buy at the store, which are one-size-fits-all and may not fit very well. Consistently wearing a mouthguard at night is one of the best ways to combat sleep bruxism.

2. Start exercising

If you don’t exercise, add a few sweat sessions to your weekly routine. Bruxism is often the result of stress or anxiety, with tension manifesting itself in teeth grinding. Exercise will relieve you of that stress.

3. Relax just before going to sleep

Any tension that is in your jaw should be relaxed before going to bed. Try relaxing techniques to release tension in your mouth, such as one or more of the following:

• Take a warm bath before bed to relax your jaw muscle.

• Place a heating pad or warm, wet towel on your jaw.

• Drink decaffeinated herbal tea to warm up your mouth.

4. Massage your jaw muscles

Do you feel your jaw clench all day long when you are faced with a stressful situation? Then relax your face and massage your jaw muscles. Rubbing releases the tension that has built up during the day.

5. Become more aware of your clamps

You can grind your teeth all day and not recognize it. Practice mindfulness several times a day to help you relax and let go of anxiety. You will notice specific situations or times of day when your teeth grinding becomes more pronounced. When you notice it happening, stop it by dropping your jaw and letting it hang for a while. Move it gently and then try to maintain a more relaxed jaw position.

6. Stop chewing anything but food

Do you chew gum all day long? Do you like to chew on ice while you work? Even if your favorite vice is chewing a pen cap, you should stop doing these repetitive movements that keep your jaw clenched.

7. Avoid chewy foods

Say goodbye to steak, popcorn and taffy on days when your bruxism has flared up. These foods require a lot of chewing and will further wear out your jaw. You know that you are grinding your teeth, or if you suspect that teeth grinding may be the cause of pain or other symptoms, see a dentist. They can examine your teeth for wear to determine if you grind them. They may also look at your bite and alignment.
