During and after the COVID 19 pandemic, many adults suffered from serious heart problems such as stroke. According to a recent study, apparently children are also vulnerable to suffering a stroke. The study analyzed the medical records of 16 hospitalized patients who suffered an ischemic stroke between the months of March and June of the year 2021. Cases of stroke in children increase after the outbreak of COVID 19, especially among children in the United States.

The authors said stroke symptoms among children are not similar to what we see among adults. Children may have weakness on one side of the body, but often have an altered mental status or difficulty walking. They further warned that even children asymptomatic of COVID could experience a serious complication such as a stroke. Stroke symptoms among children are very different from what adults face. Children experience a feeling of weakness on one side of the body, may have difficulty walking and have an altered mental health status. Children who have been found to be asymptomatic COVID patients may also experience serious health complications such as stroke.

Causes of pediatric stroke among children

It is difficult to identify specific causes of stroke among children. sometimes it happens because of cerebrovascular anomalies. any condition characterized by malformed blood vessels can be one of the causes of stroke in a child.

  • It could be genetic. Disorders such as sickle cell anemia, clotting disorders and others.
  • Environmental causes: carbon monoxide poisoning, infection, medication, trauma, vasculitis, and dissection.
  • Congenital causes: Aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, Moya-moya syndrome and also other cerebrovascular anomalies.

Pediatric stroke symptoms

Strokes in children often start suddenly. Symptoms may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • You may feel weakness on a specific side of your body.
  • Difficulty with language and slurred speech.
  • Difficulty walking or balancing.
  • Vision problems.
  • Feeling suddenly lethargic or drowsy.
  • slurred speech or difficulty with language.
  • seizure (unusual rhythmic movement of one or both sides of the body).
