Cholesterol levels can be lowered by adding onion to meals, expert says

It is thought that around 60 per cent of British adults live with high cholesterol – many of which are unaware. Having high cholesterol means that a person has too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in their blood. These fatty deposits can build up in the blood vessels and cause blockages.

These blockages are a cause for concern because of their potential to prevent the blood in that area from flowing properly.

Like many health problems, high cholesterol is often the result of various lifestyle factors.

Diet is one such factor, with foods high in saturated fats linked to elevated cholesterol levels.

In the same way that what you eat can raise your cholesterol, it can also help lower it.

Fitness, wellness, and nutrition expert Penny Weston, founder of MADE wellness center, shared the best foods to lower cholesterol.

She said: “I often feel that white vegetables, such as onions, garlic and cauliflower, are underrated and that they can help lower cholesterol, plus they have numerous health benefits, which can lead to a healthier and longer life. ”

Ms. Weston specifically advocated adding more onion to your diet.

“Onions, for example, contain vitamin B6, vitamin C and manganese, as well as sulfur compounds, which help your body improve its immune system and growth,” she said.

“Analysis of nine studies showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol in onion supplemented patients compared to the control group.”

It concluded: “In conclusion, onion supplementation was beneficial in controlling dyslipidaemia [the imbalance of fats in the blood]including improving levels of high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol, but failed to lower triglyceride levels.

Ms. Weston also recommended eating other white vegetables.

“Cauliflower is one of my favorite white vegetables, whether roasted or raw,” she said. “It contains fiber and is good for digestion and also helps reduce inflammation because of its antioxidants.

“Cauliflower is also a source of choline, an essential nutrient we need for our mood, memory and memory.

“In general, white vegetables contain nutrients that are known to lower the level of bad cholesterol in your body and reduce high blood pressure.

“Some of the other white fruits and vegetables are potatoes, turnips, bananas, white nectarines, white peaches, pears.”
