Compared to women, men visit the doctor less often.

The reasons are many. Some men may not take the initiative to find a doctor and make an appointment.

Or, as a 2016 study from the Journal of Health Psychology points out, men may have a “masculine” image of themselves, avoiding a doctor’s care. For some men, a personal condition can be too embarrassing to discuss with a doctor.

A telehealth company, REX MD, has tried to close the gap between men and their health. REX MD offers medical services at a reduced cost. They focus on providing men with prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED) and hair loss.

REX MD is a telehealth service aimed at men. They are owned by owner LifeMD, formerly known as Conversion Labs.

The company began offering generic prescriptions for ED and hair loss in men. They have now branched out into primary care and also offer care:

REX MD provides virtual on-demand access to licensed physicians in all 50 states. The service is designed to save you time and money on doctor visits. To get started with REX MD, log on to their website and answer some health-related questions prior to the doctor’s visit.

You will work with a doctor to assess your symptoms. Then the doctor makes a diagnosis. Your recipes will then arrive at your door in discreet packaging.

REX MD can be good for people who show symptoms of ED or male hair loss.

According to an study 201780 percent of men experience male pattern baldness by age 80, and there is a strong genetic link to the severity of hair loss.

ED symptoms can range from decreased sexual desire to the inability to maintain an erection. It is important to note that underlying health conditions can manifest in ED symptoms, such as:

In male pattern baldness, also called androgenetic alopecia, hair loss usually occurs on the top of the head and on the hairline of the forehead.

This hair loss is associated with a male sex hormone, the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). If you have a close relative with baldness, you may be at higher risk.

If you don’t have time to make a doctor’s appointment to talk about ED or hair loss, REX MD may be for you. Also, if you are embarrassed to discuss these conditions with your primary care physician, REX MD may be a good option.

You do not need an existing prescription to use REX MD.

REX MD has a simple process for getting started with your medications. Their website is user-friendly and there is a chat function for quick questions.

This is how it works:

  1. Go to rexmd.com and complete their online medical assessment. You enter your email address, name, height, weight and information about your sex life. You must also upload a photo for authorization purposes, a photo ID and a recent blood pressure reading.
  2. Complete the complete questionnaire of 38 questions. In some cases, the health history you complete may be enough to diagnose and get your prescription. REX MD will let you know within 24 hours. But you can always ask for a virtual doctor’s appointment if you want.
  3. If your assigned physician decides a prescription is right for you, REX MD will ship your prescription to your door in discreet packaging with free 2-day delivery.
  4. You can reach your assigned physician at any time through the site’s member portal with questions, requests, or comments. Follow-up appointments are free.

REX MD will send you finasteride, the generic version of Propecia. It is the only prescription DHT-blocking drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat male pattern baldness. It was approved in 1997.

The use of finasteride has been studied since the late 1990s. A 2012 study showed that it can help hair grow back into existing follicles.

However, recent studies show some side effects when taking finasteride. A 2020 report said that finasteride is well tolerated, but is also associated with:

  • mood swings
  • low libido
  • difficulty reaching orgasm

REX MD offers hair loss medication in quarterly plans as it takes at least 3 months to see effects and daily use is critical.

Erectile Dysfunction

The company offers branded and generic forms of sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis). They also prescribe vardenafil (Levitra). If you have a preference, you can let your doctor know.

Generic Viagra has not been around that long. Although Pfizer’s patent on the popular ED medication expired in 2020, Pfizer began making and selling generic sildenafil in 2017. Other companies have been able to sell their own sildenafil tablets since 2020.

The FDA approved Viagra in 1998, making it the first oral drug specifically prescribed for ED. It was originally tested for other conditions, but scientists found that it was good at treating some of the symptoms of ED.

In a small study from 2003scientists found that the drug does not improve sexual function in men who do not have ED symptoms.

Tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) work similarly to Viagra to help maintain an erection for longer. They are all phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors and work by blocking a certain type of enzyme.

REX MD medications such as generic Viagra and generic Cialis start at $8.50 per tablet. For people new to ED medications who may need a smaller dose, REX MD advertises Sildenafil from $2 per dose and Tadalafil from $3 per dose.

Most insurance policies do not cover telehealth services such as REX MD. But the company offers flexible pricing depending on your needs and goals.

Subscription model

With your first monthly order, you get a free online visit at REX MD. This is so that one of their doctors can provide an assessment and write a treatment plan. After that, there is a monthly recurring fee for refilling medicines.

The company says that if your doctor decides you’re not a candidate for ED medication after your doctor’s visit is completed, they’ll refund in full what you’ve already paid and then advise on next steps.

For those with recurring prescriptions, the company says they will be billed on the same day each month or with each billing period.

REX MD says you can cancel anytime on your member account page.

The company offers discounts if you sign up for 3 months.

REX MD says all drugs come free with standard USPS shipping.

The company says on their website that orders usually take less than 1 day to fulfill, which means your order will arrive in 2 to 4 days. If you prefer overnight shipping, it is available for an additional charge.

REX MD is a subsidiary of US-based LifeMD. REX MD uses US-based physicians for their telehealth appointments.

Currently, there are no pending lawsuits against REX MD. But 45 complaints have been filed through the Better Business Bureau in the past 12 months (as of June 2022).

On Trustpilot, REX MD has an average rating of 4.4 stars out of more than 2,000 reviews as of June 2022. Most of the reports about the company’s level of customer service come from satisfied reviewers, who typically refer to sellers by name. One reviewer called customer service “excellent” and said the team was “willing to do whatever it takes to resolve the issue.”

However, in comments about poor customer service, Trustpilot reviewers report that sellers like to provide excellent customer service before the sale is made, and that it is difficult to contact them afterward.

Some reviewers even seem to use Trustpilot to get in touch with the company about customer service issues, again using sellers by name in some reviews. One reviewer uses the words “bait and switch” to describe their experience. This reviewer also complains that he signed up for a subscription without permission, noting that it was “impossible” to cancel.

If you’re concerned about erectile dysfunction, your sexual health, or recent hair loss, it’s a good idea to talk to a doctor. Many of the products offered at REX MD require a prescription because they can sometimes have side effects that a doctor can help address and manage.

One of the benefits of REX MD is the telehealth option that allows you to meet with a doctor licensed in your state to take care of your concerns.

But you may prefer to talk to your regular doctor, who can also prescribe similar medications and is more familiar with your specific health history. Whether you choose to meet with a REX MD licensed physician or your own local physician, you can discuss your options openly and honestly with them to create the treatment plan that’s right for you.

Is my data safe online?

Privacy and security are taken seriously at REX MD. The company complies with the regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). They use strict encryption protocols to keep customer information safe and private.

The company is certified by LegitScript, a third-party regulatory and safety reviewer for healthcare facilities.

Does REX MD offer free samples?

REX MD does offer a “Two Night Free Sample” of generic Viagra. It’s worth noting that the sample isn’t completely free — there’s a $4.95 shipping fee — and you’ll need to create an account, meet one of the doctors at REX MD, and the samples will be prescribed. Additionally, when creating your account, you should search by state to make sure there is a licensed REX MD physician who covers your location.

Where does REX MD get their medications?

They work with GoGoMeds to fill prescriptions. GoGoMeds offers inexpensive prescription drugs mailed to your door, along with other specialty pharmacy services.

When do I have to pay for this service?

You will be charged for recurring prescriptions on the same day or at the beginning of the next billing cycle each month.

REX MD offers prescription drugs for ED and hair loss without an appointment with a primary care physician.

REX MD may be a good solution for you if you are too busy to see a doctor or if you don’t want to discuss symptoms with your regular doctor.

You pay out of pocket for these services, but they are sometimes less expensive than a copay from insurance and what you would pay at a pharmacy.
